During the last five years approximately 29.3 million tourists have traveled to the Dominican Republic through its local airports.
Dominican Tourism Minister Francisco Javier Garcia said that this number represents a 6.7% annual growth in the number of international visitors visiting the country, the highest in the Caribbean region and above the world average.
At the same time, the Tourism authorities also announced that during this same time period some 9,167 new rooms were built, while the construction of another fifteen thousand has been approved. Currently, the country has an impressive 75,729 hotel rooms.
Fifty seven percent of these rooms are situated in the Punta Cana region, in the country’s easternmost province; 17% in Puerto Plata; 10% in Santo Domingo; 4% in Samana; 3% in San Pedro de Macoris; 2% in La Romana, and 7% in other regions.
Hotel occupancy rates averaged 73.3% during the 2012-2016 period. During the first semester of 2017 occupancy jumped to an impressive 88%.
Tourism revenues totaled US$ 28.2 billion.
