During January-August 2016, Punta Cana’s international airport maintained its leadership as the local airport with the largest share (66.9%) in the number of foreign national arrivals.
The total number of tourists coming in through the terminal peaked at 2,423,049 visitors, an increase of 7.1% compared to the same period in 2015.
During the first eight months of the year the number of international travelers and Dominican nationals travelling through the Punta Cana airport reached a record high of 4,165,198 visitors, an impressive jump of 272,306 in comparison the same period in 2015.
The increase reflects an 82.6% jump in the number of foreign tourists (224,939); the remaining 47,367 are Dominicans living abroad.
Other local airports that follow Punta Cana, in order of importance, are: Las Americas International Airport in Santo Domingo (17.4% of all arrivals); Puerto Plata, with 8.1%; La Romana, Santiago, La Isabela and El Catey Samana, for a total of 7.6% of all arrivals.
The growth in passenger arrivals in absolute terms was 161,503: Las Americas, 36,632; Puerto Plata, 19,571; El Catey, 6,953 and La Romana, with 2,393 additional visitors.
