Tours to observe the annual visit of the humpback whales to Samana Bay, on the country’s northeast region, are now available from Punta Cana.
These tours will make it much easier for tourists staying at local hotels in the Punta Cana area to enjoy this exciting experience.
In the past tourists staying in the Punta Cana area had to travel to the town of Samana to participate in one of these tours.
But now, the Runners Adventures company organizes tours that leave from the Punta Cana region at 7:00 a.m. Tourists are transported on modern buses that travel along the recently inaugurated scenic northeast coastal highway.
The tour boats leave from the small fishing village of “Las Cañitas.”
The boat ride to the whale watching sites is short and safe.
The tour company uses 45-foot long boats in order to make the tour, the only one of its kind in the Caribbean, enjoyable and safe.
The full-day tour leaves from Bayahibe and Bavaro on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
After touring the whale-watching area, the tour company provides its guests with a buffet lunch in “Cayo Levantado,” a small paradisiacal key situated in Samana Bay.
After lunch, participants will have plenty of time to enjoy the key’s beautiful beach before returning to the hotel.
The whales make their way to the Bay of Samana (from the cold waters of the Arctic region) from mid-January to April in order to deliver their calves and mate in the warm waters of the Atlantic. The whale watching sites are protected areas, operated by the Ministry of the Environment.
The humpback whale can reach up to 15 meters in length and weigh up to 30 tons.
The tour company has been organizing adventure and cultural tours in the Dominican Republic for the past 20 years, and organizes tours to some of the country’s most beautiful regions from Punta Cana, La Romana-Bayahibe, Puerto Plata and Samana. The TripAdvisor travel website has included it on its “Hall of Fame” list.
