XTERRA Brings its Triathlon Competition to the Dominican Republic

The XTERRA brand has formally incorporated the Dominican Republic to its international “Off-Road Triathlon and Trail Run” circuit of competitions, the largest of its kind. With its inclusion in the circuit, the D.R. is now in a good position to promote the country as a sports tourism destination. In 2016 XTERRA Dominican Republic will celebrate three competitions in the country.

The world-famous competition will be held in various regions of the country. In March, the competition kicks off in Samana, on the country’s northeast region; in May, it will continue in Puerto Plata, on the north coast, and in July in Barahona, on the southwest section of the country. Casa Bonita, Barahona’s renowned boutique hotel, will host the closing event in July, where a US$15,000 award will be given to the overall winner.

Organizers explained that each year the competition will be held in different parts of the country, so that participants can become familiar with the beauty and tourism possibilities the Dominican Republic has to offer.

The competition’s triathlon component will consist of a 50-meter swim, a 15 kilometer mountain bike stretch and a five-kilometer trail run. In the Olympic mode, participants will face a challenging 1,500 meter swim, a 30 kilometer mountain bike run, and the trail path run will cover 5, 10 and 21 kilometer runs.

The country’s Body Shop Athletic Club, the most important in the Dominican Republic, will be in charge of all the necessary training. Its excellent staff of certified teachers will receive all the necessary support in order to have a healthy and enjoyable experience in the triathlon.

The Event is Sponsored by…

The Ministries of Tourism and Sports of the Dominican Republic; the Association of Hotels and Tourism of the Dominican Republic (ASONAHORES); CICOM, and the tourism clusters of Barahona, Puerto Plata and Samana.
