World-class health tourism is now a reality in Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic, thanks to the international certification recently issued by the World Medical Tourism Association to the city’s “Plaza de la Salud” General Hospital. The quality certification is issued only after the Association carries out a full audit of the health center.
Dr. Alejandro Cambiaso, the head of the international department, is also president of the Association of Health Tourism of the Dominican Republic.
Dr. Cambiaso explained that in order to receive the certification, the hospital was evaluated and audited in various areas, such as corporate transparency, operational infrastructure, quality and safety of health services, risk management and international services to patients, including post-surgical education and communication, cultural sensitivity, first-rate accommodations and follow-up services.
Renée-Marie Stephano, President of the World Medical Tourism Association, said that the certification is a vote of confidence given by the international health community to the hospital.
“When patients contemplate receiving treatment abroad, the accreditation of the hospital is a primary concern and often a starting point for choosing a destination,” said Stephano, and added that the hospital should serve as a model for other Dominican health providers and contribute to the strengthening of economic initiatives aimed at promoting medical tourism to the Dominican Republic.
