Innovative Project “Plants” Coral on Dominican Shores

The Dominican Foundation for Marine Research (FUNDEMAR), along with the Dreams La Romana, Catalonia Gran Dominicus, Viva Wyndham Dominicus Beach and Viva Wyndham Dominicus Palace hotels have set up coral nurseries on their respective beaches.

All the hotels are situated in the fishing village of Bayahibe, some 15 minutes east of La Romana, home to the world-famous resort “Casa de Campo” .

Guests are given updated information on the coral reef program, the importance of coral-reef conservation, and are encouraged to visit the coral nurseries and see how they are actually planted in the nearby coral parks.

Launched in 2011, the reef conservation program has, to date, planted 9,745 centimeters of coral grown in two local nurseries that feature more than 20,000 centimeters of the coral species Cervicornis Acropora.

The FUNDEMAR Foundation recently reported on the work it is carrying out with local hotels, all members of the Hotel Association of La Romana Bayahibe, to maintain the coral nurseries situated in the nearby coastal areas through sustainable tourism practices.

The program also includes training local divers on the upkeep of the coral nurseries, and how to plant the coral once they are ready to be transplanted in the nearby sea.

FUNDEMAR also educates the staff of the participating hotels on the importance of the reef-development program.

The hotels are in charge of maintaining the program, including providing updated information on the importance of the conservation of nearby coral reefs.

Local scuba diving centers, such as Scuba Fun and Gri Gri Divers, are co-sponsors of the initiative.
