Diver Launches Voluntary Underwater Cleanup Program in Sosua

The various diving schools of Sosua, the beachfront resort situated on the country’s north coast, recently launched an innovative underwater cleanup program.

On the first Monday of the month Canadian diver Bill Passmore, the driving force and inspiration behind the project, leads a group of divers to clean up the surrounding underwater sites.

The cleanup program is sponsored by the Sustainable Development Association of Sosua, and its motto is: “Let’s Clean Up Our Ocean!”

Participating Schools

The program’s initial promoters were the following local diving schools: Aqua Adventures by Scuba Dive Sosua, Vive Cabarete, Dive Center Merlin Sosua, Northern Coast Diving, Aqua Sports, Dive Technic Service. The program has also received support from private businesses such as Check Point, Bar & Snack, The Lazy Dog Concept and North Coast Designs.

The goal of the program is to create awareness among tourists visiting the north coast tourism destination, as well as its residents, on the need to maintain a clean and healthy environment.

The garbage collected during the cleanup day is deposited and collected right at the beach. Beginning at 6:00 p.m., The Lazy Dog Bar in Sosua celebrates the day’s event with live music.
