The Dominican Republic was chosen for a second time as “Best Tourism Destination in the Caribbean” during the 12th annual Travel Weekly Readers Choice Awards.
Winners are chosen by the readers of one of the most important tourism-related publications in the United States.
The award was received by Lucien Echavarria, director of the Dominican Tourism Promotion Office in New York City.
Travel Weekly has a circulation of 37,000 print copies, and its website is visited monthly by more than 1.6 million. Close to 80,000 readers visit the paper’s digital newsletter.
The Dominican Republic is a leader in the Caribbean region in the number of tourists that annually visit it. In 2014, some 4.4 million foreign tourists visited the country through its seven international airports.
In 2013 the country had 68,542 hotel rooms, the largest number in the Caribbean.
