The Caribbean Tourism Organization recently revealed that the Dominican Republic received the largest number of tourists who traveled to the region last year.
In 2013 alone, more than four million international tourists visited the Dominican Republic through the country’s international airports.
That number jumped from the 3.9 million registered in 2012, a 3.6% increase.
During 2013 the Caribbean region received more than 25 million tourists, an increase of 1.8% over 2012.
According to the Caribbean Tourism Organization for the first time in the last three years estimated spending by tourists has increased significantly to US$28 billion, up 2.3% from the previous year.
The hotel sector has also seen robust growth, registering an increase of more than 7.5% in revenues from 2012.
The tourism organization also revealed that the total number of South American tourists visiting the Caribbean jumped to 859,000 in 2009 to nearly 1.5 million in 2013, a growth of more than 13% over 2012 and 70% if compared to 2009 figures.
