Carnival time, whale watching, annual cigar lovers’ event, and the international book fair. That’s only a small glimpse of what’s scheduled in the Dominican Republic calendar of events during the first months of 2014, all of which are more than interesting events for the international visitor. If some of these events coincide with your visit to the country, make sure to include them in your calendar of activities.
Carnival Will Soon Be Here!
Every year the Dominican cities of La Vega and Santiago celebrate Carnival every Sunday during the month of February. The Punta Cana Carnival is scheduled for March 9. Some of the country’s most important travel agencies and tour operators organize fun tours to these important Carnival destinations. La Vega, situated just 1.5 hours north of Santo Domingo, is by far the most popular Carnival destination.
Whale Watching in the Atlantic
The annual whale watching season begins in January and ends in March. Hundreds of humpback whales travel from afar to the warm waters of the Bay of Samana to mate and give birth. Samana Bay now appears on the exclusive list of the world’s most beautiful bays. Thousands of national and international visitors visit the north coast city of Samana to watch the whales. All whale-watching activities are closely monitored and supervised by the Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources. Most reputable travel agencies organize tours that include ground transportation, guided tours once in Samana on board safe boats, and a typical Dominican lunch in a local restaurant. The boats leave from the port of Samana at 9:00 a.m.
This tourism fair, organized by the Association of Hotels and Tourism of the Dominican Republic (ASONAHORES), will be held at the Paradisus Punta Cana Convention Center from March 26-28. The event is co-sponsored by the Ministry of Tourism, and annually brings in international tour operators, travel agencies and other tourism-related industries.
Santiago, the country’s second most important city, is officially known as the cigar capital of the world and the eastern city of La Romana, will host the 2014 Cigar Festival from February 16-21. Participants will be able to play golf, hike, enjoy the majestic Caribbean Sea and visit cigar factories, as well as many other scheduled events.
International Book Fair
The annual book fair will be held in Santo Domingo’s “Plaza de la Cultura” from April 24-May 5th. This year the guest nation will be Panama, which will bring in the best that country’s literary world has to offer. It is by far one of the country’s most important annual cultural events.
Master of the Ocean 2014
This annual event brings in sports enthusiasts from all over the world who practice various aquatic activities such as surfing, kite surfing and windsurfing, among others. The event is scheduled to take place from February 23-27 in the world-famous Cabarete beach, on the country’s north coast.
