Canopy: Flying Over Dominican Treetops

Canopy tourism has become an important attraction for the adventure-loving tourist visiting the Dominican Republic. Originally, this adventurous way of getting in contact with nature was only offered in Punta Cana, one of the Caribbean’s most important tourism destinations.  However, the trend has now expanded to include the southwest region of the Dominican Republic, specifically the city of Barahona, the region’s most important city.

The Canopy Adventure tour ( is available in the Punta Cana region.   The tour consists of a 13-platform tour that will provide the visitor a never-before-seen view of the island from tree tops. From there the visitor will be able to enjoy the view of lush coffee and cocoa plantations, as well as the majestic beauty of the Dominican countryside.   The Canopy Adventure offers tours on Sundays, Wednesdays and Fridays.  Cost is US$89 for adults and US$60 for children over the age of 10.

Recently, the 12-room “Casa Bonita Tropical Lodge,” one of the southwest region’s most popular boutique hotels, began to offer the Canopy Tour, consisting of a one-thousand meter tour through 10 platforms strategically situated on top of huge tree tops.

According to tour participants, the “Casa Bonita” tour is by far the most important and exciting in the entire Caribbean region.

The Canopy Tour offers the visitor the opportunity to move through platforms situated on top of majestic trees.  Participants are suspended from wires, making the move from platform to platform easy and exciting.
